ACTIVITIES Consultancy
work is aimed either at providing expertise otherwise lacking within the
client organisation or simply providing extra resources at times when
in-house resources are being stretched. The use of consultancy services may
thus be essential at certain times, but is no substitute for adequate
training of full-time personnel, which provides enhanced in-house expertise
available to the company all the time. This can be achieved by many methods
from reading relevant journals to attending conferences. The former is
relatively cheap and accessible to all staff, but rarely given adequate time,
whereas the latter tends to be expensive and consequently limited at most to
one person. An intermediate approach is on-site training which has the
benefit of being able to bring together a group of people all interested in
the same objective and working to a common aim. Envirocell
organises focused seminars aimed at different audiences within the pulp and
paper sector. These are put on as general seminars at a central location, but
also as customised seminars put
on at a company's site. General
seminars Each
seminar is put on about twice per year (see below for dates in 2007). The
current standard seminar programmes are as follows: Introduction to paper chemistry This one
day seminar represents an ideal way for anyone who is either new to the
industry or for whom paper chemistry is not their main area of interest to
gain an insight into this important aspect of papermaking. The programme is
divided into three sessions covering papermaking Wet end chemistry for papermakers This two
day seminar is for anyone wanting an in-depth treatment of paper chemistry,
particularly that taking place at the wet end of the paper machine. The notes
accompanying this seminar have been completely re-written and updated,
providing a comprehensive document for reference purposes. This seminar was
presented at the 2001 annual congress of the Technical Association of the
Brazilian Pulp and Paper Industry (ABTCP) to an audience of about 70 people
with simultaneous translation into Portuguese. Wastewater treatment at paper mills This two
day seminar is aimed at anyone involved in the design and operation of
treatment plants from operators to production/technical staff, including
suppliers of treatment plant and chemicals. Whilst the legislative background
and technical theory are covered, the emphasis is on practical aspects with a
view to improving basic understanding and overall plant performance. The
notes accompanying this seminar are continually updated, providing a
comprehensive document for reference purposes. Optimising water close-up at paper mills This one
day seminar is aimed at production and technical staff at mills and their
suppliers who want to gain an insight into the motivations/problems and the
different technical approaches involved in closing up. This can only be done
by bringing together the quality, engineering, chemical and biological
aspects of the total machine/mill operation. Optimising wastewater treatment at paper mills This
seminar is aimed at anyone involved in the design and operation of mill
treatment plants from operators to production/technical staff, including suppliers
of treatment plant and chemicals. The emphasis is on practical aspects of
plant operation with a view to improving understanding and overall plant
performance and on the more recent process developments within each treatment
category. Optimising waste management at
paper mills This
seminar is aimed at anyone involved in trying to minimise impacts and costs
from the non-product residues ("waste") generated in papermaking.
The concept of "waste minimisation" means different things to
different people and this seminar will, amongst other things, explore its
various layers with the overall objective of valorising as high a proportion
as possible of a mil's total raw material input. Management and technical options for environmentally-sound papermaking This
seminar looks at what might be called the "software" aspects of
environmental management such as legislation, setting environmental
performance standards, management tools, etc and the "hardware"
aspects such as selecting raw materials, process optimisation to minimise
wastes, abatement techniques, product recyclability, etc. If there
are adequate numbers within one company, it is often better to do the seminar
in-house as this allows a more focused programme and greater freedom for
discussion. The programmes can cover the above stand-alone programmes,
combinations of these programmes or programmes aimed at specific groups of
people in the company. Examples of the latter are: - Practical
Paper Chemistry,
a one day programme developed for paper machine operators -
Practical Effluent Treatment, a one day programme for effluent treatment
plant operators. |
