ENVIROCELL 1-DAY TRAINING SEMINAR

OPTIMISING WASTE MANAGEMENT AT PAPER MILLS

This seminar is aimed at anyone involved in trying to minimise impacts and costs from the non-product residues ("waste") generated in papermaking. The concept of "waste minimisation" means different things to different people and this seminar will, amongst other things, explore its various layers with the overall objective of valorising as high a proportion as possible of a mil's total raw material input.

PROGRAMME

Pressures and motivations for optimising waste management

- legislative pressures such as IPPC, waste management licensing, etc
- business, commercial and economic aspects
- prioritising waste management options

Sources and quantities of wastes at paper mills

- process rejects and raw material packaging
- wastewater treatment sludges
- hazardous wastes

Options for minimisation of primary waste arisings

- raw material selection, delivery and storage
- control of pulp cleaning and deinking processes
- papermaking controls to minimise unnecessary losses
- maximising overall retention of raw materials

Handling of wastes at the mill

- design and operation of wastewater treatment plants
- compaction and dewatering to minimise transportation impacts
- internal material recycling of wastes or treated waste fractions
- energy recovery from wastes on-site

Options for external recycling and disposal of mill wastes

- beneficial land application
- energy recovery from wastes off-site
- conversion to or incorporation in other products
- landfill of non-recyclable residues.
